Background of the study
Urbanization is a transformative process that reshapes economic landscapes, particularly in regions experiencing rapid population growth and infrastructural development. In Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, accelerated urbanization has brought significant changes to the traditional business environment. Small-scale businesses, which form the backbone of the local economy, face both opportunities and challenges as urban growth alters market dynamics (Ibe, 2023). Rising operational costs, increased competition, and evolving consumer preferences have forced these enterprises to adapt their business models to survive. Urbanization promotes modernization and infrastructural improvements but also introduces issues such as spatial displacement and resource scarcity (Okoro, 2024). This study seeks to investigate the effects of urbanization on the sustainability, profitability, and adaptability of small-scale businesses in Warri South. It examines changes in land use, infrastructural developments, and regulatory adjustments accompanying urban growth. The research aims to identify strategies that can support small businesses amid urban pressures, ensuring that economic growth is both inclusive and sustainable.

Statement of the problem
Small-scale businesses in Warri South are increasingly challenged by the rapid pace of urbanization. The expansion of urban areas has led to higher operating costs, regulatory hurdles, and intense competition, which collectively hinder business sustainability (Ibe, 2023). Infrastructural developments, while modernizing the region, have also resulted in market disruptions and spatial displacement, adversely affecting traditional business operations (Okoro, 2024). These challenges compromise profitability and long-term viability, prompting concerns over the resilience of small-scale enterprises. The absence of targeted support policies further exacerbates the difficulties faced by these businesses. This study aims to explore the specific impacts of urbanization on small-scale businesses and to propose practical strategies to mitigate adverse effects, thereby promoting a stable and inclusive urban economy.

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To analyze the impact of urbanization on small-scale business performance in Warri South.

  2. To identify challenges that small enterprises face amid urban expansion.

  3. To propose strategies to support the sustainability of small-scale businesses.

Research questions (3):

  1. How does urbanization affect the operations of small-scale businesses in Warri South?

  2. What challenges do these businesses face due to urban growth?

  3. What strategies can enhance the resilience of small-scale enterprises?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. Urbanization negatively impacts the profitability of small-scale businesses.

  2. Increased operational costs due to urban growth hinder small business performance.

  3. Targeted policy interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization.

Significance of the study
This study offers valuable insights into how urbanization affects small-scale business sustainability in Warri South. By identifying challenges and proposing supportive strategies, the research aims to assist policymakers, urban planners, and business owners in fostering an environment where small enterprises can thrive despite rapid urban changes (Ibe, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the impact of urbanization on small-scale businesses in Warri South Local Government Area, focusing on operational, economic, and regulatory challenges.

Definitions of terms (3):

  1. Urbanization: The process of population growth and infrastructural development in urban areas.

  2. Small-Scale Businesses: Local enterprises operating with limited capital and resources.
